The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between mental health and emotional intelligence among gifted high school students. To this end, 375 students (254 girls and 121 boys) were selected by the way of using cluster sampeling from high schools for special talents in Shiraz. Emotional Iintelligence Questionnaire (EIQ) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ28) were used as measuring instruments. The construct validity of these instruments were investigated by the use of internal correlations between subscales and total score of questionnairs. Alpha Cronbach coefficients of EIQ and GHQ28 indicated a sufficient reliability across subscales. Findings revealed that all of the dimentions of mental health and emotional intelligence are intercorrelated. Results of multiple regression analysis showed that all dimentions of mental health were predicted by optimism. Among gifted high school students, optimism was the most powerful predictor of mental health. Findings were interpreted in light of related litreture. Applications for gifted and talented education were discussed. |
